Eli Lilly has secured a major win in the fast-growing market for oral weight-loss drugs after Britain became the first European country to approve Foundayo for both weight management and type 2 diabetes.
Britain’s medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), authorised the once-daily GLP-1 pill on August 10, 2026. However, approval does not mean immediate NHS availability. The MHRA said Foundayo is approved for use in the UK but is not currently available through the NHS.
What Is Foundayo?
Foundayo (orforglipron) is a once-daily oral medicine that targets the GLP-1 hormone pathway. Its biggest advantage over many injectable obesity drugs is convenience: it can be taken without food or water restrictions.
The pill is expected to launch in Britain later in August through private prescriptions. Eli Lilly said its UK private list price would be lower than Mounjaro’s £330 monthly list price, although a final price had not been disclosed at the time of the announcement.
The GLP-1 Pill Race Is Intensifying
Foundayo’s approval marks the second oral GLP-1 weight-loss treatment cleared in the UK. Novo Nordisk had already received UK approval for its Wegovy pill in June 2026.
The two medicines differ in how they are taken. Foundayo offers once-daily dosing without food or water restrictions, while the oral Wegovy formulation must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a 30-minute wait before food, drinks or other medicines.
Meanwhile, Foundayo remains under review in the European Union. Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy pill has received a positive recommendation from the European Medicines Agency, with a final European Commission decision still pending.
Why This Matters
The global obesity-drug market has been dominated by injectable treatments, particularly medicines from Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk. Oral treatments could expand access for people who dislike injections and offer a more familiar way of taking long-term medication.
However, injections remain market leaders because of their established effectiveness and convenient once-weekly dosing.
Bottom line: Britain’s approval of Foundayo is a significant milestone in Europe’s GLP-1 pill race. As oral medicines enter more markets, the next competition may increasingly focus on convenience, price, access and long-term effectiveness—not just weight loss.
