Metabolic Age Calculator
Testing phase...
Want to know whether your body is functioning younger or older than your actual age? Our Metabolic Age Calculator provides an estimate based on factors linked to body composition, metabolism and cardiovascular fitness.
Your metabolic age compares certain health and fitness measurements with typical values for people in different age groups. A lower estimated metabolic age may suggest that your measurements are more similar to those of a younger average population group, while a higher result may indicate areas where fitness or body composition could improve.
Important: Metabolic age is not a medically standardized diagnosis. Different calculators and devices can produce different results.
What Is Metabolic Age?
Metabolic age is an estimate that compares aspects of your metabolism and physical condition with reference values associated with different age groups.
For example, if you are 40 years old and receive an estimated metabolic age of 35, it means your calculator inputs are more similar to the reference profile used for a younger age group. It does not mean your body is literally five years younger.
How Is Metabolic Age Calculated?
Our Metabolic Age Calculator uses available health and body measurements to generate a general estimate.
1. Body Fat Percentage
Body composition is an important factor because excess body fat, particularly abdominal fat, can be associated with increased metabolic risk.
You can:
- Enter your body fat percentage if you already know it, or
- Use waist and neck measurements to estimate body fat using the US Navy body-fat formula.
2. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Basal Metabolic Rate estimates the number of calories your body uses at rest to maintain essential functions.
BMR is influenced by factors including:
- Age
- Sex
- Height
- Weight
- Body composition
It is used as one component of the calculator's overall estimate.
3. VO₂ Max and Fitness
VO₂ max reflects your body's capacity to use oxygen during intense physical activity and is commonly used as an indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness.
Higher fitness levels are generally associated with better cardiovascular capacity. Where relevant inputs are available, the calculator can use fitness-related information to help estimate metabolic age.
4. Resting Heart Rate
Your resting heart rate can provide additional information about cardiovascular fitness. However, it can also be affected by medications, illness, stress, hydration and other factors.
For this reason, no single measurement should be used alone to judge your overall health.
What Does Your Metabolic Age Result Mean?
Metabolic Age Lower Than Actual Age
A lower result may indicate that your body-composition and fitness inputs compare favourably with the calculator's reference ranges.
Metabolic Age Similar to Actual Age
This suggests your estimated measurements are broadly similar to the reference values used for your chronological age.
Metabolic Age Higher Than Actual Age
A higher estimate may highlight potential areas for improvement, such as physical fitness, body composition or lifestyle habits. It is not a diagnosis of poor health.
How to Improve Your Metabolic Age
You cannot directly “treat” a metabolic age number. Instead, focus on habits that can improve underlying health:
- Build regular aerobic fitness
- Include strength training
- Maintain a healthy body composition
- Prioritise adequate sleep
- Eat a balanced, nutrient-dense diet
- Reduce prolonged sedentary time
- Manage stress
- Avoid smoking

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good metabolic age?
There is no universal “perfect” metabolic age. A lower estimated metabolic age is generally interpreted more favourably, but results depend on the formula, reference population and measurements used.
Is metabolic age accurate?
It is an estimate, not a direct medical measurement. Results can vary between calculators and smart scales.
Can you lower your metabolic age?
Lifestyle changes that improve fitness and body composition may improve the measurements used by metabolic-age calculators over time.
Is metabolic age the same as biological age?
No. Metabolic age is usually a calculator-based estimate, while biological age may use different measurements and scientific methods.
